How long does it take?

The drive from Copán Ruinas to Antigua takes about 5 to 6 hours, including the border crossing at El Florido. The road runs through Chiquimula and the Motagua valley, then climbs past Guatemala City into the Panchoy valley, where Antigua sits between three volcanoes.

Crossing the border at El Florido

  • Keep your passport handy: you leave Honduras and enter Guatemala at the same post, a short drive from Copán.
  • Your driver stops at both offices and waits for you while you get your stamps.
  • Carry some cash for any fees and for snacks on the road.

Shared shuttle or private van?

  • Shared shuttle: the lowest price per seat. Ask us on WhatsApp for the price and the next date.
  • Private van: the whole van for your family or group, leaving whenever you are ready. See our private van options.

  • The Copán Ruins: the Hieroglyphic Stairway and the carved stelae of the Great Plaza are among the finest Maya sculpture anywhere. Go early, before the heat and the tour groups.
  • Scarlet macaws: the national bird of Honduras flies freely around the ruins, and Macaw Mountain Bird Park is a short ride from town.
  • Hot springs: a soak in the hills outside town is the perfect way to end a day of walking.

What to do in Antigua

  • Walk the cobbled streets to the Santa Catalina Arch, La Merced church and the cathedral ruins.
  • Hike Pacaya volcano, or take on the overnight climb up Acatenango to watch Fuego erupt.
  • Visit a coffee farm in the valley, or take a day trip to Lake Atitlán.
