After a few days diving in Utila or relaxing on the beaches of Roatán, a lot of travelers want to keep heading south into Nicaragua — Granada’s colonial streets, the surf town of San Juan del Sur, or the volcanoes around León and Managua. Getting there doesn’t have to mean a string of confusing local buses and border-crossing guesswork. Here’s how to do it with Shuttle Guacamayos.
Step 1: From the Bay Islands to La Ceiba
Roatán and Utila are both connected to the mainland by regular passenger ferry service into La Ceiba, on Honduras’ north coast. La Ceiba is also our home base, so it’s the natural jumping-off point for the rest of Central America. We recommend checking the current ferry schedule before you travel and building in a comfortable buffer, since our onward shuttle only runs once a week.
Step 2: La Ceiba to León & Managua, Nicaragua
Once you’re in La Ceiba, our direct shared shuttle takes you straight through to León and on to Managua, Nicaragua — one seat, one ride, no changing vehicles at the border.
- Departs: Wednesdays at 5:00 PM from La Ceiba
- Returns: Wednesdays at 10:00 PM from Managua
- Price: $85 per person, one-way
Because it runs weekly, this is a great one to plan your Bay Islands time around — arrive in La Ceiba by Wednesday afternoon and you can be in León before the weekend.
Why travel this route with us
- One direct shuttle, no transfers — you don’t have to piece together separate local buses or negotiate a border crossing on foot with your bags.
- A fixed, upfront price — $85 per person, no surprise fees or haggling.
- Local knowledge — we run this crossing regularly and know the route, the timing, and what to expect at the border.
- Comfortable, overnight-friendly departure — you arrive in Nicaragua ready to explore rather than exhausted from a full day of connections.
- Easy booking — reserve your seat directly over WhatsApp, no account or paperwork needed.
