Utila to León, Nicaragua, in One Trip: How to Do It

Yes, you can leave Utila in the morning and be on your way to León, Nicaragua, the same day. The key is picking the right day: our shared shuttle to León and Managua leaves La Ceiba on Wednesday at 5:00 PM, so a Wednesday morning ferry off the island is the way to do it.

Step 1: Take the morning Utila Dream ferry to La Ceiba

The Utila Dream leaves Utila for La Ceiba at 7:00 AM and 3:20 PM. Take the 7:00 AM boat. It leaves plenty of time before the shuttle, while the afternoon sailing is too tight to rely on. Arrive at the Utila dock at least 30 minutes before departure to check in.

Coming from Roatán instead? The Galaxy Wave leaves Roatán for La Ceiba at 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Either sailing works with a 5:00 PM departure, though the morning boat gives you more breathing room. Both ferries arrive at the Muelle de Cabotaje in La Ceiba.

Step 2: Ride our shuttle from La Ceiba to León or Managua

Our La Ceiba to León and Managua shuttle costs $90 per person and leaves La Ceiba on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. It’s direct, so you stay in the same vehicle through the border; nobody has to change buses or drag luggage between vans.

When you book, tell us which ferry you’re taking and we’ll confirm where and when to meet.

Before you go

  • Plan around Wednesday. If you leave Utila on another day, you’ll need a night in La Ceiba before the next shuttle.
  • Bring your passport and some US dollars in cash for border fees.
  • Watch the weather. Rough seas can delay or cancel ferries. Read our guide: Is the La Ceiba ferry running today?
  • Book ahead so your seat is held, especially in high season.

Going the other way?

The shuttle returns from Managua on Wednesday at 10:00 PM. For more on the route, see our La Ceiba to León guide.
