How to Get From La Ceiba to Lago de Yojoa: Direct Shuttle and Tips

The easiest way to get from La Ceiba to Lago de Yojoa is our direct shared shuttle: $60 per person, one seat, no changing buses in San Pedro Sula along the way. Send us your travel date on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm your seat and your exact pickup point. Below is what to expect, why the lake is worth the detour, and how to connect if you’re coming off the ferry from Roatán or Utila.

Why Lago de Yojoa is worth the trip

Lake Yojoa is the largest lake in Honduras, covering about 79 km² at roughly 700 meters above sea level. It sits right on the main highway between San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, with Santa Bárbara National Park rising on its west side and Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park on the east. Almost 400 bird species have been recorded in the region, which makes it one of the country’s favorite stops for nature lovers.

Popular things to do around the lake include:

  • Birdwatching on the water – the best views are from a rowboat or kayak at dawn.
  • Pulhapanzak waterfall – about a 30-minute ride from the lake, where you can swim, zip-line or walk behind the falls.
  • Los Naranjos Ecological and Archaeological Park – forest trails and a long boardwalk over the lake’s wetlands, easy to visit on your own.
  • Hiking in the national parks – cloud forest and mountain trails on both sides of the lake.

Shuttle or public bus?

Public buses to the lake leave from San Pedro Sula, so if you start in La Ceiba or on the Bay Islands you’ll usually have to get to San Pedro Sula first, find the right terminal and change buses with all your luggage. The shuttle takes you straight from La Ceiba to the lake in one ride. For a single traveler on a tight budget the bus is cheaper; for anyone who values time, comfort and not hauling a backpack between terminals, the shuttle is the easier choice.

Coming from Roatán or Utila

Both island ferries arrive at the Muelle de Cabotaje in La Ceiba. The Galaxy Wave ferry leaves Roatán at 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM. If you’re coming from Utila, check the current Utila Dream times on our ferry page. Tell us which sailing you’re taking and we’ll help you plan your connection to the lake. You can find full timetables in our Roatán ferry schedule guide.

From October to March, strong winds and cold fronts can delay or cancel sailings. If the weather looks rough, read Is the La Ceiba Ferry Running Today? and message us early so we can adjust your plans.
